[Not-so]-New look

Here's something I've been working on this past week: Questions, comments, concerns, yells at my lack of originality, or anything of the sort?

Updates?

I'm actually adding new content to my website for the first time since last February. Who saw that coming?

I'm in Rochester.

Podcast co-host Mark and I yesterday drove out to Rochester, New York to visit our old co-host Jeff at RIT, among other things. That said, we'll probably be recording a show later tonight, for old time's sake. Stay tuned for photos.

More podcasting updates

Podcast 13 has been recorded, marking the one-year milestone for the podcast. We're releasing it on the 23rd for consistency along with something extra, details of which I can't elaborate about. A year's worth of podcasts has grown to nearly 300MB. Today I began re-encoding our 64kbps MP3s to 20kbps WMA9 Voice files to save some space, as I'd mentioned earlier this year. If you absolutely want the MP3-based archives, download them now, because they'll be gone by the 23rd at the latest. Bandwidth savings are pretty good: our 67-minute episodes compress to under 10MB with roughly the same vocal quality....

Digital TV

I suppose it's rare to find me discussing television in a positive manner, so savor the moment. In preparation for next year's analog TV switchoff, I purchased an Insignia NS-DXA1 digital tuner at Best Buy today (with some financial aid from W, of course). I get the idea that I don't give digital technologies as much credit as they deserve. Yes, sometimes they fall awry of their intended purpose and almost always are used to satisfy some purely monopolistic restriction. This year, though, I've transitioned to digital sources twice. The first occurred earlier this year when I switched from the AMPS...

There's something I hate about dual-core CPUs.

It's that I need to add a /usepmtimer switch to new Windows installs, otherwise recorded audio comes out like this due to the CPUs desynchronizing: So now Episode Twelve gets re-recorded... I suppose this is a blessing in disguise, since last week's Ep12 was nearly eighty minutes long!

Episode Twelve has been recorded

Due to circumstances mostly beyond my control, Mark and I recorded what should have been last month's podcast just a few hours ago. I haven't cut it together yet, but should have it edited and uploaded by the end of the week. We had a lot to say, so this one's a particularly long 80 minutes unedited. By comparison, our unprocessed episodes usually come out to around 67 minutes and edit down to about an hour. In other news, I've developed a cheap system in which I can archive original and finished podcast tracks losslessly. Having lost eight episodes to a...

March 17-22

<sarcasm>Aren't my post titles creative?</sarcasm> I've been trying to post something here all week, though it's been boring enough that I haven't found anything substantial enough to dedicate a full post to. Yesterday I joined the 10k Good Friday Walk. I'd put the number of walkers somewhere slightly over 300, as we managed to overflow the 250-seater auditorium at school upon returning. Not a bad experience overall, perhaps with the exception of the weather: while it was 41°F outside (which, around here, isn't so bad for this time of year), the wind gusts of over 35mph kicked up the salt and...

List of PCs

This list of PCs was requested by a friend of mine that didn't believe I own nine PCs. Even I'll admit the story's quite far fetched, so this may at least dispel some doubt and elaborate as to how I acquired the machines to begin with. Please excuse the quality on some of the photos - I didn't have pictures on file for some of the newer machines, and since my standalone camera is broken I ended up taking pictures via video camera again. I'll update them if and when I decide to buy a new memory card for the...

Schedules, Deadlines, and More

This morning I attempted putting a wireless card into the server hosting the website, so that I could turn off some of my routing hardware (specifically, the Magnum ST80 hub and CompUSA switch) while I'm out of the house. For whatever reason, the machine kept BSODing on startup, which is a development I haven't experienced involving my wireless cards (Lucent Technologies WaveLAN/IEEE PCMCIA cards) since I quit using Windows 98. I pulled the card out, and managed to take part of the bay door with it. I didn't have time to tweezer out the third or so of the door...

Sorry for the delay.

The main part of the site is back online and functioning, even if it's only a shadow of its former self. After a quarter of a year I more or less wanted to have some content other than a static HTML page lingering around Sorry for the extremely short and ambiguous post as well.

I have a blog. Again.

I was recently inspired to give blogging another try. If you've known me long enough, you're probably perfectly aware of my two previous two-year-long attempts that eventually ended up going nowhere for one reason or another. I hope to remedy that this time around. After all, third time's the charm, eh? I have a few major reasons for taking up blogging again: Another one of my online acquaintances recently put up a blog. Some real-life friends have been pestering me to get a Facebook. My aversion to social networking in general ultimately told me not...
