Cleanliness is a virtue.

By now, some of you have probably seen the photos of how dirty my Model M keyboard got before I cleaned it. That keyboard hadn’t been cleaned at least since I acquired it in 1996, and I can’t be sure that its previous owner had cleaned it since its date of manufacture in 1989. Of course, the keyboard really never left my desk, so it wasn’t that bad of a dirt magnet.

Enter my laptop. Going on three years old this July, it’s been everywhere from hospitals to restaurants to train stations – it quite literally provokes a, “Do you know where that’s been?” sort of reaction. Its overall dirtiness factor wasn’t helped in the least by the removed sticker residue. Since all of its bumper stickers have been removed since roughly January, I decided I’d clean off the lid.

I initially figured some of the grime would come off with plain water (on the right). That didn’t help, so I switched to isopropyl alcohol. Still not satisfied, I ended up having to use acetone to get most of it off, the effects of which you can see on the left. Disturbing? You bet.

My PC case is pretty dirty (sticky actually), from when I spilled some soda on it. Thankfully none of it got into the case, where it'd cause some real damage. And, this actually gives me a reason to get a new case, as I never really liked this one.

Well Done!

It is important to maintain the clean and in good looking 'pristine' state.

Don,

You forgot to post photos of before and after.

I still don't submit to your ideology that everything needs to be kept in "pristine" or even "good-looking" condition, but there are times that things get dirty enough that they merit cleaning.

Well, I didn't think anything so drastic would happen, so I didn't take a photo of before. That would have made a photo of after rather useless.

Keeping things ‘pristine’ or at least ‘good looking’ state is the way to go.

So did the cleaning cure your over-heating problem?

I would imagine acetone is the last thing to use on plastic or anywhere near a computer?
Rubbing alcohol is not much better...LOL!

Well, it was diluted acetone, of course. It didn't melt the plastics on the screen, but it did leave a lighter-colored shiny spot where I was using it.

70% rubbing alcohol seemed to work alright without causing any damage. It left a bit of residue that I was able to get off with water.

So your superfast 64-bit dual-processor laptop is now shiny! Well done!

I did not mean that in a good way, and you knew it.

Why is shiny or sparkling clean not good? (Please excuse my poor English.)

I don't think so, but then again I wasn't up that late/early to tell.
