Cooling issues

heat

Well, it’s official – my laptop has a problem cooling itself again. I might end up buying canned air and cleaning out the fan and heatsink before assuming the worst, though.

What were you doing with the CPU that made it get hot?

"Again"? I did not recall you had cooling issue last time.

Well, I mean to make it get THAT hot. Even with some cooling issues, there is no way it should be as hot as a Pentium 4.

Don's superfast 64-bit dual-processor laptop has been working extremely hard on processing high definition videos. And the machine gets an incy, wincy, teeny, weeny bit warmer. This should not be a concern.

What makes you assume that I was editing high-definition video and not just regular standard-definition video?

Again, my laptop is not "superfast". This is not an "incy, wincy, teeny, weeny bit warmer", but a problem that needs to be addressed, as it shouldn't be getting that hot even under load. From someone that seems to worry so much about other situations that can cause device failure, such as power surges and physical shocks, I am surprised that you don't care about temperature.

Because I have no idea what the right temperature should be. When the machine works harder, it is normal that the fans run faster... hence to balance off the temperature.

Since Boston is not a humid place (Boston has beautiful snow), it is unlikely that the temperature of computer gets too hot and the computer shuts down itself.

The right temperature shouldn't be considerably higher than room temperature.

Actually, the last time this started happening, the computer actually did shut itself down repeatedly, and wouldn't start back up for about 15 minutes in between.

Turn on your aircon then.

I don't use that anymore, and I've told you that many times.

Time to use it again?

No.

So you are going to suffer the heat this summer again? Boy, you live in Boston, usage of aircon is damn normal.

"Normal" and "right" are two completely different things.

So you are going to call other people using aircon during summer 'wrong'?

# re: Cooling issues

No; that's up to them to decide. I decided that it would be wrong for me to use the aircon during the summer, so I didn't.

I fail to see why it was 'wrong' to use aircon during the hot days in summer.

# re: Cooling issues

I found that sort of energy expenditure to cool a small room was simply wasteful.

Back to topic, does your superfast 64-bit dual-processor laptop still exhibit the slight overheating issue these days?
