St. Pat – er – Evacuation Day

While everyone else either goes out to parades or pubs in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, seeing as many Boston businesses and government facilities close down for the conveniently-scheduled “Evacuation Day”, I’m staying at home and listening to U2 commercial-free on the radio. Does that count?

So the Evacuation Day was the day Americans kicked the British out?

Supposedly the story is that the British forces retreated to present-day Canada, though as my history teachings have probably been geographically biased, you may want to do your own research.

What has the War of Independence to do with St.Patrick's Day?
I thought one was to rid the colonies of British domination, and the other celebrating Irishness.
Bean Day would be the day you would evacuate Boston...LOL!!

If you ask me, they just wanted to find a reason to have St. Patrick's Day off, but couldn't use that outright as it would count as a state-sponsored religious holiday. So they got some historian to find an obscure yet important event that occurred on the same day, then lobbied for a statewide holiday.

Of course, now we have Wikipedia's "On This Day..." section to help with that.

Personally, the first things the words "Boston" and "Evacuation" make me think of are Mooninites; although alas that fateful day was a couple of months off...
