Earth Hour

I just read on Antony's blog that Earth Hour is occurring tonight at 8:30, your local time. Antony opted to say the following: Why do I think this is stupid? Instead of switching off the lights, the industry should design energy efficient products, and generating zero-pollution electricity. It's very rare that I agree with Antony, but this is one of those times. At this point in time, turning off the lights is symbolic rather than energy-saving. A so-called “smart grid” would make decisions on how much electricity to produce based on the current load on the power system, but of course such...

Much-obligatory updates

If you’re wondering where I’ve been lately, no, I didn’t go to Europe again. That’s off the radar for at least another five years. I’ve just been incredibly busy the past week. There was only one day this week that I got to bed before 1AM, and having kicked my Mountain Dew habit four weeks ago, it goes without saying that I’ve been tired too. The third academic quarter is coming to a close, and of course teachers are rushing to get grades in. In this week alone I ended up plowing through three different model AP exams in...

Internet Explorer 8

Is it me, or does this post-install process seem a bit excessive? I took these at the first launch of IE8, so the other five or six steps in the installer itself aren’t included in these ten… I don’t even remember Netscape 6 having this many pestering install dialogs. I'm still wondering what to make of this review just yet. There's definitely been progress made, but in true Microsoft fashion, it seems to just be mostly improvements to technologies already available elsewhere. The unofficial Googlebar extension (the same one I was using way back when with Netscape 7.1, mind...

The Watchmen

People have recently been telling me that I seem to share a great deal in common with the personality of Rorschach – and I’m beginning to agree with them. I got to see The Watchmen today. Despite hearing generally mixed reviews tending to fall towards the lower side of the five-star critic spectrum, I actually would say that the film overall was pretty good. I’ve heard that the main problem that people had with the film adaptation was that it failed to deviate far enough from the graphic novel to be creative rather than just a narrated comic book...

St. Pat – er – Evacuation Day

While everyone else either goes out to parades or pubs in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, seeing as many Boston businesses and government facilities close down for the conveniently-scheduled “Evacuation Day”, I’m staying at home and listening to U2 commercial-free on the radio. Does that count?

For those experiencing difficulties with the blog...

For those experiencing difficulties with the blog these past few weeks, I offer the following explanation which I am fairly sure is not RFC 2616-friendly:

What is it with keyboards?

It seems like the computing industry has never really come to consensus on how to make a good keyboard. I’m an avid Model M user myself, and I’ve managed to convert some of my friends over to ‘80s-style clicky keyboards made by IBM and Unicomp. In my own opinion, IBM came the closest to making a truly good keyboard – and for all I know they did. The buckling spring technology used by vintage IBM keyboards gives really nice tactile feedback, but does so with the added expensive of auditory feedback. Given, some people like the sound, though for...
