Screen replacement

I’ve been mentioning for awhile now that the number of lines down my laptop’s screen has been on the rise. My original intention was to wait until the new school year to replace the screen, though with the appearance of a tenth line earlier this week, that became somewhat prohibitive to my ability to actually operate the laptop without an external monitor attached.

Perhaps by some interesting coincidence, I happened to be talking to Andrew about horizontal lines through the screen of a digital camera, and decided to give eBay another search for a replacement laptop screen. Though my searches for the past few months have turned up the same few $118 replacement TFT panels, this time I found a $79 “Buy it Now” auction for the SXGA+ panel plus a brand-new display housing, which will also fix the issues I was having with the hinges and screen lock. I’m also sure that this will get Antony’s approval, as my current display housing has a large number of visible scratches on it. For the price of $79, I wasn’t about to let a deal like that slide.

I’ll be sure to post again when I get the replacement screen. Hopefully this will end up turning my computer back to a laptop from a slimline desktop.

My supposedly-unlucky Friday the Thirteenth seems to be off to a surprisingly good start.

Next laptop you get will not be an HP, I'll assume?

If it is an HP, I think we can expect Don to keep his pickaxe busy for years to come.

(Er, long story.)

I've always been hostile towards HP/Compaq since the DEC merger days. They ruined a great company and a great CPU.

My current "something's gone terribly wrong" replacement choice is a ThinkPad R500, configured with a 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB of DDR3, a 250GB hard drive, 1680x1050 15.4" screen, and a 9-cell battery all for under a grand. I'll be bringing my own Windows and Office.

(Obviously you can see that I've prepared for the worst.)

I'm prepared for an EEEPC or a really cheapo used laptop in the mobile front, or that $70 mobo/case/psu special on newegg on the desktop front.

Don, I would suggest that a ThinkPad R500 replacement. Saving you other troubles.

However, if you are really ready for putting a new monitor yourself, why not.
