e-Waste: How do I get rid of it?

Rather than simply throw out my non-landfill-friendly trash, I keep my so-called "e-waste" in a box underneath my bed. Needless to say, it's starting to fill up, and opening the box can sometimes make my eyes begin to water.

P1290005

This box is home to dead hard drives, useless write-once CDs, damaged floppies, blown electrolytic capacitors, burnt-out fluorescent light bulbs, and some dead (and even leaking and sulfated!) batteries. So therefore, this box contains varying amounts of lithium, sulfuric acid, zinc, manganese, mercury, cadmium, and various other heavy metals.

Does anyone actually dispose of these by any particularly "safe" means, or am I just being an idealist?

You are trying to act responsibly DON.
Plastics go to re-cycle bin. HD's, after applying the hammer, can go to metal re-cycle or land-fill.
Batteries can go to special disposal points, along with compact fleuro bulbs.
I would imagine in "beautiful Boston" the city offers such services.
And DAVE, these things are not sparkling new or made by the "right" manufacturers, so our, *ahem*, southern hemisphere friend, would not be interested!! LOL!!

Just draw and apple on it, and he'd spend hundreds on that crap.

Mostly from when I was away and ran out of rechargeable batteries for my camera. Some are from alarm clocks, TV remotes, radios, etc.

Although I still hate rechargeable batteries and recently started buying rechargeable batteries (AA and AAAs). You didn't need to comment on me using Sony, Energizer and Duracell batteries since you bought expensive Duracell as well.

And interestingly, you missed all the no-name batteries in there.
