Times are tough...

In response to the recent economic downturn, the convenience store down the street from me has increased their price for a two-liter bottle of soda from $1.99 to $2.29. I usually walk in with a $10 bill and buy their fridge's stock of five Mountain Dew bottles; sadly, I can no longer do that.

To the best of my knowledge, the price at the local supermarket is still $1.64. They're extremely rude there, to the point where I'd much rather pay the extra marginal 35 cents to not have to set foot inside. Sixty-five cents, on the other hand, might just force me back there regardless of how many security guards check me for shoplifting each time, or how many cashiers force me to go through their full lines instead of the express lines (with less than twelve items, mind you). A sign of the times, indeed.

Save for the bizarrely declining price of gasoline, what other common items that you buy have gone up in price lately?

Don,<br /><br />It is only $1.50 more when you buy 5 bottles of Mountain Dew.<br /><br />The groceries have increased a lot in recent years (not just due to the financial crisis). So are the prices of coffee and milk.<br /><br />Xbox 360 has just decreased the price, making it the cheapest console available, and it is only $20 more than the price of a PSP.

Hey Don,<br /><br />The first Tuesday in November each year in Aus is Melbourne Cup Day, a mega horse race.<br /><br />I was shopping locally during the week before and saw that tomatoes were $1-99 per Kg.<br />A day after at the same shop they were $3-99, same display, everything.<br />So I said out loud to anyone who would listen, "How in the hell can the tomatoes go up by $2 overnight?".<br />The little foreign guy who runs the shop said, "Every year at Melbourne Cup time, tomatoes go up!"<br />This was at least a week prior to the big event!<br />I have a considerable number of Melbourne Cup days under my belt and I have never heard of such a thing!<br />Retailers are just parasites, the growers get very little, and certainly none of that $2 he tacked on overnight.
