March 17-22

<sarcasm>Aren't my post titles creative?</sarcasm> I've been trying to post something here all week, though it's been boring enough that I haven't found anything substantial enough to dedicate a full post to.

Yesterday I joined the 10k Good Friday Walk. I'd put the number of walkers somewhere slightly over 300, as we managed to overflow the 250-seater auditorium at school upon returning. Not a bad experience overall, perhaps with the exception of the weather: while it was 41°F outside (which, around here, isn't so bad for this time of year), the wind gusts of over 35mph kicked up the salt and sand left over from some earlier snowstorms. I supposedly made it onto Channel 7 News that night, though between the Walk and work I ended up going to bed around 7PM. Consequently I woke up at 4AM, so I suppose there's no reason trying to sleep any further.

In other news, I converted my headphones to run off solar power... Sort of. The base station is designed to draw 200mA at 12 volts. Conveniently I have a couple of 12-volt SLA batteries laying around that are capable of powering the base station for roughly nine hours, along with a CycleSaver solar charger that my dad unsuccessfully tried using with his old car. The batteries take about an afternoon to charge on the CycleSaver (remember that a solar panel only outputs its peak current if sunlight is directly hitting it - I only receive about four hours of direct sunlight on this side of the house), which is about twice as long as with the official charger. The headphones themselves draw around 100mA at 1.5 volts and provide power for about twelve hours, so charging the AAAs I use in them is rather negligible.

I'm going to try and record another Podcast episode today, if conditions allow. As it stands now I'm rather incapacitated to do so, due to my lack of a desktop microphone and a machine that can actually run Skype. For the interim, I'm thinking of using the phone instead of Skype for control, and a cassette recorder instead of Audacity for recording. From there, I can import my track off the cassette and continue as I would normally. Alternatively we could just record on-site again, much like we did for the Christmas episodes, though we all know how that turned out...
