March 17-22

<sarcasm>Aren't my post titles creative?</sarcasm> I've been trying to post something here all week, though it's been boring enough that I haven't found anything substantial enough to dedicate a full post to. Yesterday I joined the 10k Good Friday Walk. I'd put the number of walkers somewhere slightly over 300, as we managed to overflow the 250-seater auditorium at school upon returning. Not a bad experience overall, perhaps with the exception of the weather: while it was 41°F outside (which, around here, isn't so bad for this time of year), the wind gusts of over 35mph kicked up the salt and...

Super Smash Brothers: Brawl

As some of you may be aware, Super Smash Brothers: Brawl for the Nintendo Wii received a good deal of hype prior to its heavily-delayed launch. Nintendo employed just about everything from radio announcements to billboards to ads at the movie theater to introduce Brawl to the general public. Not that this was unmerited, of course: the Super Smash Brothers franchise constitutes by far the largest portion of Nintendo's console multiplayer market. The game released this Monday, and I got a chance to play it earlier today. I briefly gave Brawl a try using a Wiimote controller,  but soon found this...

Well, is it broken or not?

I now have reason to believe that the problem with my laptop this time around isn't a flat-out defective mainboard. Rather, it seems that the DC input jack came loose from the back of the unit: it'll provide power if the plug is held in at an angle. I find it interesting that this very thing happened to my old HP laptop twice before I settled on buying a considerably more durable port replicator to remedy the issue. For now, I still haven't got a clue whether or not I should be trusting the machine to work any further. I'm...

Reliability is an oxymoron.

I've semi-officially given up on laptops. They're a great concept that were ultimately destroyed by the constant drive to create cheaper products, which in turn results in a product that works for maybe a year and a half before exhibiting serious problems. My nx6325 decided to kick the bucket yet again, a mere three months after I received it back from HP's support facilities with the so-labeled "defective" motherboard replaced. It's now exhibiting the same problems yet again, which have (among other things) driven me into a rage of sorts about the quality of manufacturing nowadays. A number of people have...

Olympus C-3000Z

After trying and failing to buy a replacement camera off eBay for well over a week, I turned to Craigslist in search of a faster means of achieving the same thing. Quite conveniently, I found someone living not far from me with an Olympus C-3000Z for sale - two memory cards, a carrying case, neck strap, infrared remote, and video cables included - for a meager $50. For comparison, the camera retailed for $799 back in 2000. After one e-mail and one phone call, I dropped buy just hours after seeing the ad and picked up the camera, no middlemen...
