New Reviews section, HH2K Podcast Episode 12

Posted Sun, 04 May 2008 15:17:22 EDT by Don_HH2K

I'm going to try experimenting with a Reviews section in the coming few months, posting articles as I obtain new hardware and software. A few hours ago, I purchased an Insignia NS-DXA1 DTV tuner at Best Buy and wrote a bit about the box, complete with screenshots of the box's interface, once I had it up and running.

Episode Twelve of the HardwareHacks 2000 Podcast is up for download following a series of hard-drive-related recording incidents. Get it it while it hasn't corrupted!

HH2K Podcast Episode 11

Episode 11 of the HH2K Podcast, formerly the Nostalgia Gaming Podcast, is available for download. We recorded earlier this week but encountered processing delays.

I've created a new mod page covering my recent LaserJet 1100a Scanner Server, which intends to get the scanner on an old LaserJet 1100a running on a machine without a parallel port or available drivers. While the software is specific to the LaserJet 1100a (and most likely some other HP scanners), its design should be easily portable to any other scanner software that stores information in plain-text files or in the Windows Registry.

Second try.

Unforunately I'm not having the best of luck with the server lately, with yet another failed hard drive leading to an outage lasting roughly four hours. This new crop of problems seemed to be stemming from our newer server, a 2.4GHz Gericom Hummer, so I have the site back on our older 233MHz Gateway server.

The site's content is back; the forums and my blog are down until further notice.

For better or for worse...

The site's back up. Unforutunately I didn't have as much of an opportunity as I'd have liked to rework, rewrite, or create new articles to post here, despite having taken a quarter of a year to finish what's now here.

I'm attempting to switch the focus of the site over from guides and tutorials to hardware customization and software development. In honor of this, I'd like to introduce our new gaming PC, which this time around has actually been built from the ground up by MetKiller Joe and is currently being used as his full-time PC. You probably know MetKiller Joe as one of our podcast co-hosts. Since the demise of the news section back in September of this year, we've aired episodes six through nine of the Nostalgia Gaming Podcast. If you haven't tuned in, feel free to do so and share your opinion on our Forums.

After my migration to the 64-bit Windows platform in July of last year, I began searching for native 64-bit software to run on the machine. In the past year and a half, support for the new x64 platform has increased dramatically, with a number of major open-source and proprietary vendors alike distributing 64-bit builds of their software. Originally I had planned a link repository of 64-bit software for those running 64-bit machines; it's now apparent to me that doing so would take something more powerful than a simple XML page with an XSL transformation applied to sift through the quantity of 64-bit software that's been made available. I'm now running a 64-bit VC2005/VC2008 build environment and have begun recompiling the code to C/C++ based open-source projects while targeting the x64 platform. Unofficial and unsupported 64-bit builds of various open-source apps that do not yet have a 64-bit native equivalent are now available here. If you would like to request that an open-source app be recompiled to x64, you can let me know via the forums.

I can safely say right now that more hardware mods and software are in the works. Stay tuned for easy image resizing, Mozilla add-ons, and more.
